Resources for Running and Growing Your Own Business

No matter what business you are in, as an entrepreneur in 2016, there are certain resources you will need.

Absolute Necessities

These are the things you absolutely must have or you are not really in business at all.

  1. Something to sell.  This seems rather obvious, right?  But this is the place you have to start — and a mighty important one it is, too!  If you get this wrong the rest will be very difficult.
  2. Someone to buy what you have for sale.  Also rather obvious.  However, what if you have this really great product idea, but no one really needs or wants it.
  3. A way for your customer to find your product and purchase it.
  4. A way to deliver what you sell to the buyer and provide service after the sale.

I could write entire books on each of those, but I will leave those for another day. But I will briefly review my business as an example.

What I sell

My products are health and wellness products that help people get and stay healthy on two fronts — physically, fiscally.  One line of products helps people with their health through better nutrition and making healthier living choices.  The other line of products helps anyone who chooses to go into business to learn what they need to know with online courses designed specifically for what’s happening in the current world of marketing and business.  The two fit together beautifully since many of the physical woes can be alleviated with higher standard of living that allows people to eat better and take better care of themselves.

Who my customers are

My customers are people who want to get and stay as healthy as they possibly can — no matter their current state of health — no matter whether we are talking physical health or financial health.  They come in all ages from before conception, throughout pregnancy, labor, and birth through infanthood, toddler-hood, childhood, teen years, young adults, young parents, mid-life changes, life after kids and careers, and elderly.  They come with a myriad of aches and pains, diagnoses and conditions.  All the way from arthritis to zinc deficiency.

Financially, my customers also represent the gamut of financial conditions on planet Earth — from the flat broke to the multi-millionaire. Anyone who eats and inhales oxygen needs what I offer.

How my customers find my products and purchase them

Marketing that includes online and offline methods.

  • Online methods include blog posts, ad placement, Facebook marketing strategies, LinkIn marketing strategies. email marketing, webinars.
  • Off line methods include teaching classes, word of mouth, writing newspaper articles, etc.

How my products and services are delivered to my customer

  • The physical products are drop shipped directly from the company.
  • The education courses are delivered electronically online. Some are downloaded. Others are used as online services.

How I provide service after the sale

I stay in touch with my customers a variety of ways.

  • Phone
  • Email

The Nitty Gritty – What you really need to accomplish all that you need to accomplish to run your own business

The truth is this

You will not be great at everything.  

You may be okay at some things and awesome at others.

And you will more than likely have a talent or a knack for parts of the business and not for other parts.

Remember this.

Recognize which parts are which.

Once you have identified which is which you will have some options.

  • You can hire someone who is better at the parts you are not as strong in
  • Or you can outsource it.

However, making that decision will be important to your bottom line because you will definitely want to keep responsibility for the part of your business that keeps the money rolling in.

Do not relinquish complete control unless you are ready to live with the consequences of someone else being in charge of the outcomes.

Starting Out

As you start out in your own business, you need to be able to concentrate on getting the right things done in the right order, on time, every time.

You will need:

  • A business plan
  • A marketing plan
  • A budget.
  • Money to live on until the business can support you.
  • A place to conduct business
  • A business license — sooner or later
  • An accountant — sooner or later
